Chaucer's Retraction

In this last piece, Chaucer is asking God to forgive him for his sins. He is also asking Him to forgive him for his works and how he has written them. There may have been words that are inappropriate and not to God's likings, and of course Chaucer saw through that, but I guess that before he dies, he wants to be forgiven.

  1. I kind of find it weird that Chaucer does this. Is it incase people do not like whathe wrote that he is apologizing for it? I think Chaucer is a great author and his writing bare truth even today, but is he apologizing for his honesty?

  2. Good point. It is wierd that Chaucer would want to say some final words after his last work. I mean I like some of the readings but that doesn't mean that he's a bad author for writing them. And like you said, it does bare truth to it all especially in the world today.

  3. I think its pretty weird that he apologizes also! I've never seen a writer do that. Most writers know that atleast ONE person will have something bad to say about their writings, so they do not even worrying about apologizing for what they write. I agree you with you Jessica, I think Chaucer is a great author and his writing has alot of truth in it! Maybe he's apologizing because of the time period he wrote his stories in, I'm sure in the 14th century talking about the stuff he wrote about was not done! But today, it's perfectly normal to read about controversial stuff.

  4. I truly agree. I don't know if he felt bad after how he had did his works but I think God forgave him. Alot of people are reading his book(s) especially us.

  5. I know Chaucer wanted to have great writings therefore he has to go outside his boundries to have great writings that he knows people will read. He did that and I believe he had alot of readers reading his work. Therefore by stepping out of his boundries he knows that some of his writings would not be to God's likings and therefore ask for forgivness. I believe that shows good judgement for Chaucer that he was able to ask God for his forgiviness. Some writers write things that I do not see fit and most probably either one do not believe in God or just do not ask for forgiviness b/c they there writings as nothing can happen to them. If its in a book that means someone had to think of it!! Good for Chaucer for asking forgivness
